NDT with Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra

29 Aug 2013

Mariinsky exclusively in The Hague on 15, 16 and 17 November 2013

Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) has established a lasting partnership with the world-famous Mariinsky Theatre from St Petersburg. Master conductor Valery Gergiev leads the oldest classical ballet company in the world, the orchestra and the opera. In honor of this unique relationship and because of the current Netherlands-Russia year, NDT has invited Mariinsky to their home in The Hague. On November 15 the Mariinsky Ballet dances the fairytale The Little Humpbacked Horse and on November 16 and 17 the Romantic masterpiece Giselle. The ballets are accompanied live by the Mariinsky Orchestra, the first evening conducted by Valery Giergev.

Valery Gergiev (Moscow, 1953) has been principal conductor and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre since 1988. Gergiev made his Dutch debut in 1987 with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. One year later he led four concerts with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at De Doelen. These performances led to his appointment as guest conductor. Since then the Gergiev Festival has been held annually in Rotterdam. In 2005 the maestro was made Officer of the Royal Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau.

The traditional Russian fairytale The Little Humpbacked Horse is staged in the choreography by Alexei Ratmansky (2009). It tells the story of an ordinary boy Ivan, who receives a humpbacked horse as a reward for solving a mystery. The ugly creature appears to have special powers and helps Ivan to endure impossible trials set by the greedy Czar. The ballet is accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, which plays the music of composer Rodion Shchedrin.
“In Alexei Ratmansky’s version of “The Little Humpbacked Horse,” the Mariinsky Ballet is positively frolicsome, fresh as a daisy, endearingly friendly, cute as can be, bubbling over with high spirits and even giggly.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

The ancient Romantic ballet Giselle (1841) is a universal love story about the tragic fate of peasant girl Giselle, whose heart is broken by her beloved nobleman Albrecht. Prima ballerina Diana Vishneva
performs the title role on November 16.
"No company Giselle dances with more elegant refinement than the Mariinsky" THE NEW YORK TIMES

NDT and Mariinsky have engaged in a creative exchange in the ongoing quest for inspiration. Both companies have a tradition in classical ballet and international reputations that complement each other well. This summer NDT 1 performed in both the historic and the new Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. This tour was a valuable experience for us, as ballet stars such as Niinsky and Pavlova grew up on this stage. Next week the exchange is reversed. The Mariinsky Ballet will be our guest in The Hague where it will treat the Dutch public to Russian masterpieces, accompanied by the Mariinsky Orchestra. Both companies are very pleased with the stimulating relationship, that in the coming years should lead to the development of collective educational and creative projects.
This partnership is purely artistically driven. NDT is a cultural production company where there is room for a variety of artistic and social attitudes. NDT is of course aware of the international protests against the recent political developments in Russia. NDT respects every human being, regardless of origin, sexual orientation or religious beliefs. NDT believes above all in the power of art and modern dance, that emerges beautifully in the performances of the Mariinsky Ballet.
