Switch ’14 Benefit Dance Performance
Switch, the annual benefit performance from the dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater, takes place on Saturday March 22 at Lucent Danstheater in the Hague. All revenue from the evening goes to a charity of the dancers’ choice, whilst showcasing the talent of emerging choreographers from the company. This year the beneficiary is a research collaboration in Myanmar of Medical Action Myanmar (MAM, Myanmar) and the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD, the Netherlands) with support from ArtAids (Spain). The collaboration aims to improve the treatment for Aids and HIV which is currently offered in Myanmar. Next to financial support, the dancers will give dance and art classes at the MAM clinic and surrounding community this summer. Tickets for Switch ‘14 can be booked here.
By taking the helm and organizing this performance from A to Z, the dancers are presented with opportunities to participate in artistic, social and administrative responsibilities from development, design, photography, to budgeting. These opportunities provide an outlet for the dancers to explore and develop new skills, which help prepare them for career transitions.
During Switch, dancers from both NDT 1 and NDT 2 present their choreographic skills. The Norwegian Jon Ole Olstad challenges himself: "Creating steps and structures with dancers to be performed on stage frightens me. Creating a personal footprint and a unique atmosphere that makes you as the audience question your own life, fascinates me and my creative mind. It makes me feel alive, thankful and vulnerable." And, Luna Mertens (France), who joined NDT 2 only this year, will create: "I made my first piece two years ago for the "Werkstatt der Kreativität" in Hamburg. This time I want to try something different by choreographing on myself. I want to be the one to interpret and explore my personal feelings." The youngest Van Opstal dancer, Xanthe (the Netherlands), is working on a creation for colleague Katarina van den Wouwer and herself. “I can’t wait to dive into the studio and bring my ideas into practice."
The production team of Switch ’14 consists of Myrthe van Opstal (NL), Garen Scribner (USA), Danielle Rowe (AUS), Meng-Ke Wu (Taiwan), Roger van der Poel (Portugal), Spencer Dickhaus (USA), Clara Villalba (France) and Xanthe van Opstal (NL).
