Secondary education
For pupils of secondary schools we have put together a combination of activities that focus on modern dance and NDT. The goal of all the activities is to acquaint pupils with the art of dance. The point of departure is: to experience dance not only by looking at it and talking about it, but also by moving and creating dance.

Practical information
Take a look at our programmes for secondary schools and feel free to contact us. We are open to discuss new ideas and suggestions with you. For more information about our activities for secondary schools please contact our school Education representative: Pascale Price +31 - 70 - 88 00 146 or pascale.price@ndt.nl.

Teaching material before a performance
For our performances we can supply digital teaching materials on request. The teaching materials consist of a digital instruction manual for teachers and a hand-out for pupils. To request the teaching materials please send an e-mail to educatie@ndt.nl         .

Educational combination
Together with the secondary school teachers we can develop a diverse and custom-made educational programme attuned to the (long-term) curriculum of the school. Every combination of activities is developed for the level of the participating year and the educational aim of the teacher. A combination is always linked to our latest productions and can include the following activities:

*A look inside NDT's home
Welcome to our home! What does our living room look like, and do the dancers really have their own swimming pool? Pupils are escorted through the various spaces of our theatre and they can see what daily life is like at Nederlands Dans Theater.

*A visit to a rehearsal or class on stage or in the studio
One by one the dancers come on stage. To stretch, warm up their muscles, rehearse the steps. The choreographer gives instructions and the concentration is palpable. Quietly take a seat in the otherwise empty theatre and experience the last phase of the creation of a dance piece.

*Meet an employee of NDT
Do our dancers get nervous sometimes too? What is it like to work in the costume department? How do the dancers become so muscular? How large is the stage really? Meet an employee of Nederlands Dans Theater who can answer all the questions pupils may have about the company.

*A dance workshop
To be a dancer is to work very hard. It requires discipline, concentration, body awareness, strength, creativity and, above all, enormous willpower and passion. In our workshop you will experience this as you sweat in the studio trying to make combinations with the most beautiful moves. You will also discover that dance can be fun and, above all, will bring you joy.

*Experiencing a dance performance
You take your seat in the theatre, slowly the murmurs around you fade away and you are surrounded by an expectant silence... Be inspired by the dancers on stage and enjoy the power, concentration and technique on display. Pupils prepare at school with the teaching materials for their visit to the theatre. Attending a performance can only be included via ‘Move in’, in combination with one or more of the activities mentioned above.

Dates:                        On request
Location:                    At NDT
Suitable for:                Higher general secondary education and pre-university education

Danswaaier – A series of lessons at school
Arithmetic, language, geography. There is so much to learn in school! Fortunately you also have a dance class now and again! You learn a lot from that as well. For instance about working together, listening to each other, and different languages and cultures. And actually, it is much more fun than solving math problems.
Based on the themes ‘Look at me dance’ (kindergarten), ‘Dance languages’ (grades 1 through 3) and ‘World orientation’ (grades 4 through 6), pupils learn in a series of lessons about dancing themselves, creating, observing and making presentations. The series of lessons takes into account the educational aims for primary schools and the development stages of children in the different classes/school levels. 'Danswaaier' is also ideally suited for working toward a presentation during, for instance, a project week.

Dates / On request
Location / At school (we need a large, clean space equipped with a TV and a DVD & CD player)
Duration / Series of lessons are a minimum of three, and a maximum of five, adapted to the level or year. It closes with a presentation.
Suitable for / Kindergarten and grades 1 through 6; separate courses for kindergarten, grades 1 through 3, and grades 4 through 6*
Prices / €60 per 60 minutes, €90 for 90 minutes (€55 per lesson when ordering more than three)

Danswerk - On a visit to NDT
During a dance performance the dancers are in the spotlight. But there are plenty of other people who are working hard to put a dance performance on the stage. For example, who takes care of that special lighting on stage? Where does the music you hear in the theatre come from? And where do the dancers get those beautiful outfits? In ‘Dance work’ pupils experience how much concentration, strength and body awareness it takes to be able to dance, but above all the joy that dance can give you. In addition we pay attention to the various professions in a company such as the choreographer, costume designer or lighting technician. We offer the following activities: a dance workshop in our studios, a tour of our theatre and/or an interview with an NDT employee.

Dates / On request
Location / At NDT
Duration / 2-2,5 hours
Suitable for / Grades 3 through 6, the activity is adapted to the size and level of the group*
Prices / €90 per group for the total package (individual tours are €2 per pupil)

NDT 2 danst - To the performance
You are sitting on the edge of your seat, then the lights go down. The curtain goes up and you wait with bated breath. You hear the audience laugh at the oddities performed by the dancers, cheers during the soaring jumps and a loud 'whooo' when two dancers embrace each other passionately. And perhaps we can see you on stage for a moment. There are four school productions for the 4th and 5th grade of the primary schools in The Hague. For each production there is a hand-out, a behind-the-scenes tour, a dance workshop at school and a wrap-up lesson from the school's teacher.

Dates / Performances on 22 and 23 April 2013
Location / at NDT
Duration / Performance 60 minutes, and approximately 3 hours of activities surrounding the performance.
Suitable for / Grades 4 and 5*
All registrations are handled by Het Koorenhuis, The Hague

Meesters en Juffen op bezoek - visit for teachers
We invite all teachers to visit us in the theatre! During this visit the team of teachers is introduced to modern dance. This introduction is aimed at helping teachers to select one or more educational activities for primary schools. We focus on how children experience and relate to dance, how they look at it, and ways in which teachers can prepare and inform pupils before and during cultural dance activities. The relation between dance and the different regular school subjects is also discussed. The visit can also be adapted to meet the needs of the team of teachers.

Dates / On request
Location / At NDT
Duration / 4 hours
Suitable for / primary school teachers

NDT Together - Partner schools
For our primary education activities we work together with partner schools. Together we create a safe place where we can experiment and develop new material. This joint effort runs for three years. If your school is interested in becoming a partner school of Nederlands Dans Theater, please feel free to contact us to explore the possibilities.*

Dansklank
In 1913, composer Igor Stravinsky created Le Sacre du Printemps specially for Sergei Diaghilev's world-famous dance company Les Ballet Russes. Dancer/choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky created a choreography inspired by this music composition. In the light of this famous example of collaboration the young choreographer Medhi Walerski and the young composer Joby Talbot created a new work together for a joint performance by NDT and The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra. They were inspired by the original music and choreography of Le Sacre du Printemps.
The workshop ‘Dansklank’ focuses on the synergy between music and dance. ‘Inspiration’ as the driving force behind the creation of a new work of art serves as a guideline. Of each participating school one group takes part in a music workshop and the other group in a dance workshop. At the end of the afternoon the entire group comes together for a presentation. We end the day by attending the joint performance of NDT and The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra.
