Nederlands Dans Theater 'Summer Intensive' starts soon

25 Jun 2012

A new edition of the ‘Summer Intensive’ will start on 30 July 2012. It is a unique summer course organised by Nederlands Dans Theater in The Hague especially for up-and-coming dance talent from across the globe. There is huge interest in the ‘Summer Intensive’. Following the successful kick-off of this exclusive summer course last year, nearly four hundred dancers applied for a place in this year’s course. The Artistic Committee has now selected sixty dancers to participate this summer.

Developing talent with the aid of private donations
The talented participants, who range in age from 14 (!) to 28, will share the home of Nederlands Dans Theater with the company during the ‘Summer Intensive’. They will complete a two-week programme that mirrors the company’s daily routine. The focus is on inspiring young talent and stimulating their artistic and dance technique development. The company’s dancers will in turn have the opportunity to develop their skills as teachers and choreographers.

Twenty-two participants will be able to fulfil their dream thanks to scholarships provided by Nederlands Dans Theater and financed by a number of private donations. A unique aspect of this arrangement is that the contributors will enter into a relationship with the participants as an adoptive parent or host family whereby they will pay the tuition fees or provide accommodation in their homes. Nederlands Dans Theater is consequently setting a good example of financial entrepreneurship aimed at private patronage in an era in which financial independence is becoming increasingly important.

All the lessons during the ‘Summer Intensive’ will be provided in the own studios by dancers and former dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater and other professionals affiliated with the company. The programme will include technique, repertoire and new creations. There will also be a satellite programme featuring current and interactive topics such as lectures on nutrition and massage techniques.

Through-flow of talent
There is a wealth of talent among the participants. Previous editions of the summer course produced dancers who ultimately gained a place in Nederlands Dans Theater 2: Marne and Myrthe van Opstal, Arina Trostyanetskaya, David Ledger and Casia Vengoechea. Vengoecha was able to take part in the 2011 ‘Summer Intensive’ thanks to a full scholarship and adoption, which ultimately led to joining the company. The company’s own dancers also engage in talent development. Myrthe van Opstal, who participated in the summer course in 2009, is now a dancer with the company and will serve as a teacher for the participants this summer.

Public programme
A public programme has been composed especially for other dance enthusiasts, and will comprise various workshops related to the ‘Summer Intensive’ programme. The workshops on Saturday, 4 and 11 August 2012 will be open to novice and advanced dancers. More information about the workshops here

The summer course will be concluded on 11 August 2012 with an open evening at Theater aan het Spui. A limited number of tickets are available for this event (€10.00 pre-sale, €12.50 at the door). You can order your tickets here.
