Kick-off unique summer course at Nederlands Dans Theater
On 8 August 2011, Nederlands Dans Theater launches its first-ever ‘Summer Intensive’ – a brand-new, 2-week summer course for 60 upcoming, talented young dancers – at its home base in The Hague.
The participants, from all corners of the world, were accepted to the programme based on a DVD audition in which a total of more than 280 dancers participated. All training courses are offered in the studios by dancers and choreographers affiliated with Nederlands Dans Theater and other professionals employed by the company. The programme features both Nederlands Dans Theater’s own repertoire and new productions. House choreographer, Paul Lightfoot, will give a masterclass. The summer course concludes on 20 August with an open night at the Lucent Danstheater in The Hague. A limited number of tickets are available for this event (advance tickets: €10; door price: €12) through www.nederlandsdanstheater.nl.
Nederlands Dans Theater’s ‘Summer Intensive’ is the only summer course in the world to be organised completely by a leading dance company, providing the full programme using only its own resources and facilities. Nederlands Dans Theater funds the course with income from registration fees, contributions from the Friends of Nederlands Dans Theater, and various donations. Nederlands Dans Theater uses these donations to provide 16 scholarships to talented participants. The financial support will help these dancers fulfil their potential.
The summer course is designed to inspire talented young dancers and encourage them in their artistic and technical development, while at the same time giving the company’s own dancers the opportunity to further develop as dance coaches and/or choreographers. In order to build a bridge between dance education and a professional dance company, one place has been assigned to a dance student of The Hague’s Royal Conservatoire and one place to the winner of the prestigious Dance Award in the Prix de Lausanne competition.
The three editions of the predecessor to the ‘Summer Intensive’ – the
now-defunct Maximum Dance Course – showed the wealth of talent found among the participants. Four graduates of this summer course eventually went on to formally audition for, and join, Nederlands Dans Theater 2: Marne and Myrthe van Opstal, Arina Trostyanetskaya and David Ledger.
Workshops are also provided for amateur dancers of all ages (these are currently open for registration; see the Publieksprogramma (Audience Programme) section of the website).
