In 2021 Imre and Marne van Opstal created 1 Baby Don’t Hurt Me for NDT. This work originated from authentic attempts by each dancer to tell an intimate story. The performance has an intimate question as a starting point, how can we express something that concerns us all? Can the personal become universal?
When you put your heart on your sleeve, you run the risk of being painfully condemned or misunderstood. This vulnerability is one of those things we all have in common.

The brother and sister duo Marne and Imre van Opstal, originally from Limburg in the Netherlands, are two of the most exciting and sought after choreographers in the world. With their roots firmly in a family full of dancers, they started their professional career at Nederland Dans Theater (NDT). Both were active as top dancers until 2020. After this, they became fully focused on choreography and making cutting edge contemporary dance. Their works explore themes such as identity, sexuality, gender and love, and what this means in our current world. Take Root, a production for NDT 1 was nominated for a Zwaan for best dance performance.
