OFFprojects – The Bone Algorithm (excerpt)

The Bone Algorithm is an interdisciplinary performance that takes place within a spatial music instrument. The exquisite dancers of OFFprojects navigate their way through a fluctuating landscape of wires and pendulums. Every change they make to the space affects the sound that the installation generates – every change in the sound affects the choreography, and so on in a fascinating interplay of cause and effect.

The entire installation is an electro-acoustic sound instrument that can be triggered by both the actions of the dancers as well as digital pulses from a computer. The piece takes us on a search for ‘organic intelligence’. A journey from digital to analog, from code to intuition.

As part of Cadance festival and NDT’s program Into The Hairy, the audience is invited to witness an excerpt of the performance in the intimate setting of the Black Box studio. This unique encounter highlights the very essence of the project. After the short performance the public is invited to explore the instrument themselves.

OFFprojects is a The Hague based collective of former NDT and Batsheva dancers gathered around the work of choreographer and musician Amos Ben-Tal. The group is known for their innovative interdisciplinary work. During 2025 Amos and the collective are artist/company in residence at NDT, which co-produced The Bone Algorithm. In recent years OFFprojects successfully collaborated with interdisciplinary artist Gosse de Kort (Interval, 2021) and sound artist Salvador Breed (PART, 2022). Interval was nominated for the prestigious Zwaan award and PART was named by the Dutch press as one of the best performances of 2022.

Important: The Bone Algorithm lasts 30 minutes, and it is possible to visit this before Into the Hairy.
