The performances in this programme have taken place in season 2018-2019.

Season 2018-2019 kicks off with a triple bill of four choreographic masterminds whose choice of music is as important as the stories they tell through their respective dance languages. In these often unpredictable marriages of movement and sound, associate choreographer Marco Goecke is known for his eclectic choices of music that always bring forth the most unexpected symbioses of music and movement. For Saisonnier Goecke will present a new creation. We have come to know Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter as a creator of powerful pieces that leave a lasting impression. For his new piece, Shechter will compose the musical score himself. The evening concludes with Sol León and Paul Lightfoot’s Singulière Odyssée (2017) that the choreographic duo created to Exiles by Max Richter. The world renowned composer created this music especially for this piece.

A selection of performances* will be accompanied live by The Ballet Orkest and Slagwerk The Hague:
* live music: 27 t/m 29 Sept, 5 Oct, 14 & 15 Nov, 15 & 21 Dec

Saisonnier is made possible by Ammodo.

In this programme

Singulière Odyssée – Sol León & Paul Lightfoot

Singulière Odyssée by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot is symbolic of the choreographers’ awareness of how the predominance of travel, of moving and of living in an everlasting state of flux has carried through the DNA of our times. The piece is set in a train station based on the art deco waiting room of Basel’s Central Station. Dancers come and go as passersby in transit with the exception of one character who lingers in waiting and watches travelers go by and come back, in a moment frozen in time. For this piece, the music, titled Exiles, has been especially composed by none other than Max Richter.

Whether you like it or not, this is dance that moves you.

Walk the Demon – Marco Goecke (world premiEre)

Central to Goecke’s new work is the conception of dance as art, which also makes a ‘voice’ audible behind the movement, and the desire to reinforce that voice of the piece through further voices. Alongside the musical voices of the orchestral works by Czech composer Pavel Haas and the Finn composer Pehr Hendrik Nordgren, Goecke once again made the exceptional voice of Antony and the Johnsons part of his art and declares:

I think it is dramatic and big, but at the same time also contemplative and intimate, in her voice lies a torment that points inwards. For me, the dance says absolutely nothing if it doesn’t constantly refer to the inside.” Besides the voice of the movement, Goecke also repeatedly gives his dancers their acoustic voice to make them appear less abstract and human: screeching, roaring, cursing, which seems obsessive, sometimes whispered words that repeat themselves yet for Goecke entail life entirely: “All life and love is a Thank you, hello and goodbye“, expatiates Goecke, as he takes a walk with his demon. – Nadja Kadel

In 2014 Marco Goecke (Germany) joined NDT as an associate choreographer. Goecke was both the house choreographer for the Stuttgart Ballet (2015-2018) as well as for the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam (2006-2011). His most recent works for NDT are Thin Skin (2015), Woke up Blind (2016), and Wir sagen uns Dunkles (2017). His creation Midnight Raga (2017) earned him the ‘Zwaan’ for ‘most impressive dance production’.

Almost every time it is striking, this masterful control of movement and despite its abstraction, as moving as portraits of the searching, anxious man.

VLADIMIR – Hofesh Shechter (wereldpremière)

When you put your heart on the table, be ready to have it crashed. It’s when life breaks in, a stream of pain, passion, sensation…everything for sensation…we want to feel, we want to live, we want to push far into the suffering, the beauty, the vodka, the tv, the dance routines. Fuck poetry, only Vladimir can save us.

GUIDO DUTILH on WALK THE DEMON

“In the studio I noticed the mutual trust between choreographer and dancer. All dancers completely trust Marco’s choices, and Marco never seems to question a single dancer’s abilities. He can be demanding, but never discouraging. With a fun sense of humor he shares intimate and vulnerable stories and creates an open space for everyone to laugh, cry, dance and quiver to their fullest potential.”

MARNE VAN OPSTAL on VLADIMIR

“Hofesh generously invited us into his process of creation which made it honest and open, allowing us to easier dive in together. In my eyes the heart of this work is the incredible effort of the ensemble, always carefully curated and driven by his signature style and energizing music. It’s nice to directly connect with each other using movement that feels groovy, fresh and daring. There is a strong sense of freedom and tension which makes it interesting to explore. Music and rhythm is such an integral part of how Hofesh creates and having his score brought to life by ‘Slagwerk Den Haag’ and ‘Het Balletorkest’ gives us so much energy, you could almost forget where you are.”
