In Wildsong, we dive into the dynamic, surreal worlds of two acclaimed makers that highlight the unique versatility of the NDT 1 dancers. Choreographer Jan Martens creates his first world premiere for us, full of stamina, rebellion, and bold, punk-infused compositions. We also revisit the much-loved and theatrical Horses (2024) by our associate choreographer Marcos Morau.

This programme will premiere during Holland Dance Festival.
The performances in Amare, The Hague are accompanied by live music from the Dutch Ballet Orchestra.

About the programme

Jan Martens - World premiere

We are thrilled to welcome celebrated choreographer Jan Martens to NDT, a profound voice known for his bold and abstract creations that are brimming with energy. Martens’ works are closely intertwined with contemporary music, bringing every score to life in an exhilarating way. When selecting his music, Martens challenges the dominance of mainstream and often male-driven music, striving to cultivate a broader appreciation for alternative voices. For his first NDT 1 creation, Martens will collaborate with a large ensemble of dancers, set to Julia Wolfe’s Pretty and Hanna Kulenty’s GG Concerto—two bold, punk-infused compositions that interact with each other and amplify the movement on stage. This world premiere promises to be a celebration of stamina, resistance, brilliance, and rebellion.

Marcos Morau - Horses

“It seems that we live halfway between the animal and the human being, between freedom and control, between intuition and the rational.” - Marcos Morau.
Once again, we step into the imaginative world of Horses (2024) by our new associate choreographer Marcos Morau. Renowned for creating visually striking works, Morau crafts surreal landscapes, drawing you into the unknown. In Horses, Morau invites you to reflect on what it means to survive in our increasingly complex world—one filled with turmoil, transformation, and the paradox that sometimes, losing our way is part of moving forward. With its bold theatricality and electrifying score, and works by Andrzej Panufnik and Caroline Shaw, Horses is a mesmerising experience that lingers long after the curtain falls.
